We've all memorized the iconic moments of our favorite teams. We remember where we were when they won big games, lost bigger games, became hometown heroes, and more. But how's your random sports trivia knowledge? The world of sports is rife with obscure, lesser-known facts and stats that seem impossible. Here are just a few of them that stuck out to us.
- Tug of War isn't just a game made up for summer camps. From 1900 to 1920, it was featured in the Summer Olympics!
- Volleyball was originally called “Mintonette” when it was invented in 1895.
- Soccer fields are not one fixed size: the laws of the game allow the touchline to range from 90 to 120 meters and the goal line to range from 45 to 90 meters.
- A regulation golf ball has to follow tight size and weight standards, including a diameter of at least 1.680 inches and a weight of no more than 1.620 ounces.
- A singles tennis court is 78 feet long and 27 feet wide, while a doubles court is the same length but 36 feet wide.
- Table tennis balls were changed from 38 millimeters to 40 millimeters after the 2000 Olympics to help make the sport easier to follow on TV.
- On average, less than 18 minutes of a baseball game is actual action. That's a lot of standing around!
- A rugby ball is not just “football-shaped”; official guidance describes the standard ball as oval, made with four panels, and allowed within specific length and circumference ranges.
- Wheelchair tennis follows the same core tennis rules, but the ball is allowed to bounce twice, and the second bounce can be inside or outside the court boundaries.
- In badminton, the shuttlecock’s feathers create heavy drag, which is why it can leave the racket extremely fast but slow down quickly in flight.
